They are ubiquitous in the body, soil, and deep sea, and are extremely diverse, numbering as many as 1031. Recently, phage have attracted attention because they can infect (sterilize) drug-resistant bacteria, which are currently a serious problem. However, bacteriophages are biologically dark matter, and their details are still largely unknown.
